ABOUT LUCY

I am a Ceramic Sculptor and an Art Therapist, and a former graphic designer. While in graduate school for Art Therapy in the late 90s I rediscovered my love for art. I also found a particular affinity for clay, which is my favorite medium today.

My own process of uncovering my dormant creativity in undergraduate college was an experience that I bring to my art and my creativity teaching today. Up until my late teens, I used to draw in a very tight, realistic style. Whereas in highschool I was rewarded for that, in college I began to view it only as technical ability, but not creative ability, and I had the idea that "I was not creative". One day, my senior year, one of my professors saw my dilemma, and challenged me to consider my next painting to be a STUDY. This created a major breakthrough for me. No longer did my art need to be perfect right from the beginning. From then on I learned the importance of experimenting with the process, instead of judging the product.

I now understand that this is true in life as well. When we get too bogged down in things needing to be perfect, or done in the right way, we become more tense and stressed out, rather than fully experiencing and embracing life along the way.

I am greatly inspired by the writer Eckhart Tolle, and am influenced by the study of "Health Realization". Both take a look at Thought, and how our thinking influences our life experience. Art can help us to transcend thought, in a similar way to meditation. We are able to step outside of ourselves for a time, and move into a feeling that can be described as free, easy, or in the zone. We can then apply these feelings to other aspects of our lives.

The awareness that Thought isn't going to solve many of my problems, but letting go of Thought will, has helped me immensely in living a happier, more stress-free life. And now I aspire to bring this to others!
